Predicting Disruption and Disruption Intensity
Goal disruption theory puts forth six categories of factors that influence the likelihood that a goal violation will become a goal disruption, as well as the intensity with which the disruption will be felt:
1) Violation Severity- the unexpectedness of the violation and the strength of the violated expectations/beliefs.
2) Violation Imprint- the number of impaired expectancies and the perceived importance of the goal to
the person’s well being.
3) Opinion of Efficacy- an individual's perceived capabilities of finding an alternative path to restore their
feelings of safety.
4) Structural Harmony (State of the System)- current psychological state, organization, flexibility.
5) Personality Traits- individual personality traits that buffer the intensity of a violation (i.e., tolerance of uncertainty, trait anxiety).
6) State of the Goal- current distance, importance, and discrepancy of an individual's goals.
