Expected Failure

Please imagine you are in a work situation where you have no reason to expect a strong bonus for the month. Your sales were strong and you helped other make their sales strong as well. Even though you did all that you needed to do, you knew the monthly bonus was not coming. Today would have been the big day. You are going to get an email letting you know that you did not receive a bonus. You fully expect to receive no bonus. If things were different, you could have expected a bonus, but you knew this would not happen. The email came as expected. And, as expected there was no bonus. You were not surprised at all. 

Unexpected Failure

Please imagine you are in a work situation where you have every reason to expect a strong bonus for the month. Your sales were strong and you helped other make their sales strong as well. You did all that you needed to do, and you knew the monthly bonus was going to come. Today is the big day. You are going to get an email letting you know how much of a bonus you received. You fully expect this bonus. You are completely confident the bonus is yours. Then, the email arrives. Unexpectedly you received no bonus. You were completely shocked.
